Twelve Drown in Zamfara River as Residents Flee Rampaging Bandits

At least 12 people have lost their lives in a canoe mishap in Danmaga village, Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, the police have confirmed.

Our correspondent gathered from security analyst Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred on Friday evening after villagers spotted armed bandits moving rustled animals towards Birnin Magaji district.

In a desperate bid to escape, some women and children boarded a canoe to cross the river.

However, the canoe capsized midway, killing 12 passengers, while more than 20 were rescued alive.

Security operatives and local divers later recovered the bodies for burial in line with Islamic rites.

According to sources, search efforts are still underway to locate possible missing victims from the tragedy.
