President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília on Monday to begin a state visit to Brazil, stepping off his flight from Los Angeles to be received by senior Brazilian officials at the Brasília International Airport before a programme of high-level talks and memorandum signings.

The reception party included Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, and Nigeria’s Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, while ministers and business leaders later welcomed the president to his hotel ahead of a full ceremonial welcome at the Planalto Palace.

During the visit Mr Tinubu is scheduled for a tête-à-tête with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expanded bilateral meetings, the witnessing of MoU signings and an appearance at the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum as the two nations seek to deepen cooperation across trade, agriculture, and energy.

The statehouse release noted the long history of diplomatic ties – “Nigeria and Brazil share longstanding cordial diplomatic relations from the early 1960s” – and recounted recent exchanges that have helped set the scene, including Nigeria’s participation at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit and a series of ministerial visits.

The statement highlighted concrete projects and investments anchored to food security and mechanisation, mentioning the $2.5 billion JBS investment and the ongoing $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme to supply tractors and farm equipment for assembly in Nigeria.

Signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) on 25 August 2025, the release presented the trip as part policy push, part trade mission – and a high-profile chance to show Nigeria’s diplomatic reach on the world stage.
