Senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General will now enjoy lifetime salary benefits under a new policy approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, describing it as a major step towards officer welfare.

“We have successfully cleared the long-standing backlog of promotions. Over 50,000 officers have been promoted within the last two years alone,” he said.

TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered from a statement by the Federal Fire Service that the new policy forms part of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Tunji-Ojo added that a performance-based progression system will guide future promotions, while new training manuals and a world-class Fire Academy are being developed.

The minister also stressed the importance of mental health in the workplace and urged the Federal Fire Service to partner with the private sector to modernise operations.

“Collaboration is crucial for enhancing service delivery, infrastructure development, and firefighting operations,” he stated.
