Soldier Killed in Bauchi: Police and Army Launch Joint Probe
The Bauchi State Police Command has appealed for calm after the killing of a Nigerian soldier by a police officer during an operation in Alkaleri Local Government Area.
TIMES OF NIGERIA collected from a statement issued on Friday by command spokesperson CSP Ahmed Wakil that the incident occurred on 25 August, when troops of the 33 Artillery Brigade attempted to intercept a truck suspected of transporting solid minerals.
During the operation, Master Warrant Officer Ali Haruna was mistakenly shot by Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, a mobile police officer assigned to provide security for expatriate mining companies operating legally in the area.
Haruna later died from his injuries at Gombe Specialist Hospital.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu said a joint team of detectives and military police had been set up to “thoroughly investigate the immediate and remote causes” of the incident.
He described initial media reports as “misleading” and warned journalists against publishing unverified information that could undermine inter-agency cooperation.
Aliyu expressed condolences to the Nigerian Army and Haruna’s family, assuring that the investigation would be evidence-based and transparent.
