Over 1.3 Million Nigerians Pre-Register for Voter Cards in One Week
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 1,379,342 Nigerians completed online pre-registration for voter cards within the first week of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered from an INEC press release that the online registration, which commenced on Monday, 18th August 2025, attracted a strong response across all states.
The Commission said 661,846 registrants (47.96%) were male, while 717,856 (52.04%) were female.
Young Nigerians aged 18 to 34 constituted the majority, with 860,286 (62.37%) registering.
INEC disclosed that 374,534 students (27.15%) signed up, while 27,089 persons with disabilities (1.96%) also registered.
Full details of the exercise have been published on the Commission’s website and other official platforms.
Meanwhile, physical registration begins today across 811 state and local government offices nationwide.
This will allow those who opted for online pre-registration to complete the process, while new applicants can register directly in person.
INEC appealed to the public to note that registration is strictly open to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who are not already on the voters’ roll.
Double or multiple registration remains illegal, though inter-state transfers and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards are allowed.
National Commissioner Sam Olumekun, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, stressed that the exercise would run until 30th August 2026, but urged citizens not to delay.
“From experience, registration centres are often overwhelmed by last-minute rush and appeals for deadline extension. We advise eligible voters to seize the opportunity early,” he said.
