NiMet warns of storms and flood risk: ‘high possibility of flooding in parts of Borno and Yobe States’
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued its daily outlook for Monday, 25 August 2025, forecasting thunderstorms across large swathes of the country and a significant flood risk in the northeast, with the bulletin noting: “There is a high possibility of flooding in parts of Borno and Yobe States.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take necessary precautions.” In its region-by-region breakdown, the agency warned of morning and afternoon thunderstorms in numerous northern states, including Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Kaduna, afternoon and evening storms for central areas such as Niger and the FCT, and intermittent light rains across much of the south.
The advisory, issued on 24 August 2025, came wrapped in the agency’s standard public-safety emphasis: local authorities, emergency services, and stakeholders should remain on alert.
NiMet’s notice – headed with the social post’s meteorological emoji and timestamps – set out a practical steer for commuters, farmers and planners, underlining that while much of the country will see rain, the greatest immediate danger of flash flooding is in the northeast.
Citizens in at-risk communities were urged to monitor local announcements, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, and take sensible precautions to protect lives and property as the rainy spell continues.
