The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has rolled out a centralized Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) API platform to modernise weather information delivery for the aviation sector.

TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered that the upgrade, which replaces the legacy SADIS FTP system, aligns Nigeria with international aviation standards and positions the country as a pioneer in Africa.

The SADIS API, operated by the UK Met Office under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), provides instant, secure access to global weather datasets, forecasts, and observations.

Aviation operators in Nigeria will now receive high-resolution, real-time information to enhance flight safety, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director-General and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), praised the achievement.

“This innovation demonstrates NiMet’s leadership in embracing modern technologies that strengthen aviation safety and efficiency while ensuring compliance with ICAO and WMO standards,” he said.

The platform offers critical data including turbulence forecasts, cumulonimbus alerts, volcanic ash tracking, and operational meteorological reports such as METAR, TAF, and SPECI.

With the launch, NiMet says pilots, forecasters, and operators across the country will now benefit from faster and more reliable weather intelligence.
