In a move to strengthen the state’s agricultural sector, Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa has signed into law the bill establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development.

TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered from the Governor’s office that this follows a report from a 17-member committee he inaugurated to examine the creation of the ministry and the appointment of its commissioner.

The new ministry aligns with the Federal Government’s initiative under President Bola Ahmad Tinubu to promote livestock farming as a critical component of national food security.

Governor Namadi also enacted legislation establishing the Jigawa State Agricultural Transformation Agency (JATA).

The agency is tasked with ensuring that Jigawa benefits from major national and international programmes designed to enhance agricultural productivity, particularly in leading farming states.

TIMES OF NIGERIA was informed that the move aims to modernise farming practices and attract greater investment into the sector.

Garba Muhammad, Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor, confirmed the signing on 26th August 2025.

He described the initiatives as “vital steps towards sustainable food production and economic growth in Jigawa State.”
