The Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority has issued a fresh warning of potential flooding across the Jigawa-Kano axis following the overflow of the Chalawa and Tiga Dams.

According to the Managing Director of the Authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, both dams have reached maximum capacity, creating a major threat to downstream communities.

“The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” he said.

TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered from the Authority that water will be released from the dams, which could affect settlements across Ringim, Hadejia, Auyo, Kafin Hausa, Kirikasamma, and Guri.

Communities along the Hadejia River Basin are therefore being advised to take urgent precautionary measures.

The warning comes in the wake of devastating floods in recent years, which claimed over 200 lives, destroyed homes, and damaged thousands of hectares of farmland, with estimated losses running into billions of naira.

The Authority has called on state and federal governments to urgently support affected communities and implement proactive measures to limit the scale of the disaster.
