The Federal Government has endorsed a fresh Medium-Term National Development Plan (2026–2030), designed to consolidate ongoing reforms and provide policy continuity.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, disclosed the development while briefing State House correspondents after a National Economic Council meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He confirmed that the plan, which will be launched in December 2025, involves all three tiers of government and replaces the outgoing 2021–2025 plan.

TIMES OF NIGERIA gathered from Bagudu that the previous plan fell short of its 7% growth projection due to delays in implementing critical reforms such as subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation, and tax reforms.

“Regrettably, those actions were not taken and therefore, the anticipated result of 7% growth rate was not achieved,” he explained.

The minister said economic reforms initiated under President Tinubu in 2023 are already yielding results, strengthening hopes for the new plan.

“From 2023, when the macroeconomic reforms were taken, we have seen the economy responding as envisaged,” he noted.

According to Bagudu, the 2026–2030 strategy will guide federal, state, and local governments as well as the private sector, ensuring broad participation from political parties, civil society, traditional institutions, and youth groups.

He added that the plan, tagged Renewed Hope Plan, will accelerate job creation, expand infrastructure, and boost food security while serving as a bridge to Nigeria’s long-term Agenda 2050.
