The Bayero University Kano, BUK, Alumni Association (BUKAA) has successfully held its 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together distinguished graduates from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones for a day of reflection, networking, and renewed commitment to the development of their alma mater.

Our correspondent, Hussain Isah, reports that the AGM, held on Saturday, 6th September 2025, featured high-level speeches, strategic resolutions, and a historic milestone – the unveiling of the association’s first-ever dedicated alumni website.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, himself an alumnus of the class of 1991, praised BUKAA’s leadership for sustaining its relevance over the years.

“Bayero University is doing well – currently ranked 6th best among Nigerian universities, 4th best among public universities, and 1st in international visibility,” he said.

“With effective leadership, stakeholder engagement, and enhanced funding, we will take the University to even greater heights.”

Air Vice Marshal Saddik Isma’ila Kaita (rtd.), the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, encouraged the alumni body to institutionalise an annual alumni day, deepening bonds, sharing knowledge, and inspiring current students on the value of alumni relations.

A keynote lecture on Corporate Governance, delivered by Ambassador Shuaibu A. Ahmed, represented by Alhaji Ali Madugu, CEO of Dala Foods, emphasised that good governance is vital for non-profit organisations as well as corporations.

“Accountability and transparency drive credibility, sustainability, and societal impact,” he noted.

The event’s chairman, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, commended the progress of the association but called for inclusivity.

“There are still challenges ahead. We must ensure that all alumni are actively engaged and united,” he urged.

During the business session, members passed a vote of confidence in the BUKAA leadership, endorsed its audited financial report, and pledged continued support for upcoming projects.

In a historic move, the association officially launched its alumni website. The Chairman, Alhaji Shuaibu Idris, described it as a transformative step.

“Whether you graduated in 1980 or 2020, this website makes it easier to connect, network, and give back,” he said, adding that the platform will host communication, donations, and professional support initiatives.

Alhaji Idris also highlighted ongoing projects, including water supply improvements at the new campus, upgraded sanitation facilities for students, and the establishment of a substantial endowment fund to support Bayero University’s growth.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman explained that the AGM was shifted from the first to the last quarter of the year due to unforeseen circumstances, but assured members that future meetings would revert to the traditional schedule.

The Vice-President, I, Aare Akinkunmi Akinyemi, gave the vote of thanks, appreciating all who contributed to the success of the 35th AGM.
