INEC shortlists 14 associations for political party registration, to meet the conveners Wednesday

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 associations have been pre-qualified to proceed to the next stage of registration as political parties, following a review of 171 applications submitted to the Commission.

In a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the decision was reached at the Commission’s regular meeting held on Thursday, 11th September 2025.

Our correspondent understands that each application was assessed in line with Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

INEC explained that while 14 associations scaled through the preliminary stage, 157 others failed to meet the basic requirements.

The names of the successful associations have been published on the Commission’s website and official platforms.

The pre-qualified associations include:

  • African Transformation Party (ATP)
  • All Democratic Alliance (ADA)
  • Advanced Nigeria Congress (ANC)
  • Abundance Social Party (ASP)
  • African Alliance Party (AAP)
  • Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA)
  • Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA)
  • Grassroots Initiative Party (GRIP)
  • Green Future Party (GFP)
  • Liberation People’s Party (LPP)
  • National Democratic Party (NDP)
  • National Reform Party (NRP)
  • Patriotic Peoples Alliance (PPA)
  • People’s Freedom Party (PFP)

The Commission invited interim Chairmen and Secretaries of the shortlisted associations to a briefing scheduled for Wednesday, 17th September 2025 at INEC headquarters, Abuja.

Olumekun explained that beyond uploading details to the Commission’s portal, INEC would also physically verify all claims made by the associations.

The final decision on their registration would be taken after the verification exercise.

He stressed that registration of political parties remains a continuous process under the law, and that INEC is open to considering fresh applications that meet constitutional and legal requirements.
