Parents Back Calls to Ban Graduation Ceremonies in Kaduna, Katsina

The debate over graduation ceremonies in Nigerian schools has intensified, with many parents in Kaduna and Katsina supporting restrictions to curb excesses and financial burdens.

Our correspondent reports that states such as Kano, Sokoto, Imo, Edo, and Ondo have already banned or restricted such events, citing rowdiness, financial pressure, and misconduct.

In Kaduna, parents argued that banning ceremonies would reduce costs and help redirect focus to academics.

Teachers also welcomed the idea. “This policy will help us focus on academic excellence. It could promote discipline and value reorientation,” said John David, a teacher in Kaduna.

In Katsina, authorities have not imposed a total ban but directed schools to regulate conduct during ceremonies.

Commissioner Zainab Musa-Musawa warned against “excessive partying and unauthorised sign-outs,” while teachers argued that parents must also play a role in curbing student excesses.
